Ask HN: Job market for Staff/Director tech roles barren?

4•treyfitty•5mo ago
I’ve been through internship recruiting in 2007,2008, changed jobs just before Covid, and periodically submitted my resume from time to time. I have a job, and I’m not desperate, but the past 6 months have been 0% conversion to initial screen. Literal 0. Maybe 10 resume submissions per month, a few tweaks to my resume each month… but nothing. Is it just me?

Definitely don't recommend you lose your job. I just spent 10 months without one. Then suddenly I had 3 offers. I think it's the BBB, but just in case, don't lose your job.

From my reading of the news, layoffs are happening all over the place. 10,000 here, 15,000 there, etc. All the big name firms have implemented "resource adjustments".

My guess would be that unless your skills are in a hot area, like AI/ML etc, opportunities are scarce and there are lots of folks out of jobs searching.

So it's probably not you, it's the economy.

Hundreds of applications since I was laid off in November. Working a trash entry level job in an unrelated field to try and pay the bills. The market is absolute garbage.
