An original source piece is at https://blog.google/products/translate/language-learning-liv...

# New AI-powered live translation and language learning tools in Google Translate // Using advanced AI models, we’re introducing new live capabilities to make it easier to communicate in real-time, and a new language practice experiment designed to help you meet your unique learning goals

...In that stub, I read a terrifying expression:

> Exploring the world is more meaningful when you can easily connect with the people you meet along the way. To help with this, we [implemented great tools to facilitate real time conversations]

With the paradox of the sentence containing 'meaningful'. There must be something weird in the emerging drives in the aggregate culture, to suggest those open introductions ("Welcome to an awk tutorial. Learning `awk` may help you professionally and give you an advantage in daily practice..."). Maybe it's a trickle-down from old management-speak ("leverage proactively on the auxiliary advantages of metabolism and get hydrated")?

--

The certainly great news come without surprise. I suppose an important number of LLM users exploit them as a language learning aid. That is certainly a practice I suggested to apprentices - already asking questions, the automated tutor... I suppose the language model will delirate dramatically less on the topic of language in use: do we have data on this?

(On the other hand, I know that some LLMs are completely dumb in linguistic competence, specifically the deep roots of terms. They know when the term is used - it constitutes what they are -, and yet remain oblivious of what the term is. Which again heavily suggests a structural fault, in the difference between Intelligence and this layer of substantially a statistical inference.)
