Ask HN: Avoiding AI slop in music services

4•kermatt•5mo ago
TL;DR - Are any of the music streaming services less prone to obvious AI generated garbage?

I have been a user of Spotify since their early days. The "Release Radar" was the first thing I looked at on Friday mornings, and was a great way to keep up with favorited artists, and discover new related ones.

Today, it is full of AI generated trash. The trick I see is established artists used as the second in the list of collaborators, but in the first 5 seconds of a stream it is obvious this is false.

I suppose it's possible Spotify has a revenue driven interest to let this continue, given the number of articles I have seen about this trend. But when it comes to music, I am less inclined to be a community moderator of obvious spam. Allowing anyone to upload tracks under another band's name is a terrible idea.

My Spotify subscription won't be renewing in the next billing cycle, and in the meantime I'm looking into alternatives that provide a good, curated discovery feature.

Recommendations?

Qobuz? Pros: they give more money to artists, they have real playlists, and seem to curate better. Cons: No "dynamic" playlist like "monday new stuff" or "friday fuck the system," and you have to browse the playlists yourself.

They do have a personal weekly playlist, and I know that they are trying to do more in the beta version, but it's pretty limited. You have to look in the different categories yourself. Also you have to turn off you VPN to subscribe (for taxes purpose I guess) but you can turn it back on after that.

I've tried them all, and besides the lack of personal recommendations, I like it so far.
