Unfortunately the article doesn’t make it explicitly clear what the inner ear has to do with the eyes and visual system. When the ear motion signals become unreliable the brain increasingly depends on visual signals for motion detection. Since visual motion could be interpreted as self motion rather than external motion, user interfaces should be able to minimise motion cues, because the user might interpret that as self motion.
