Personally, I think "Musk effect" is post hoc reasoning. I think the primary driver is price. BYD decided to attack the market segment around $35,000 and Tesla stuck at $75,000.
Plus, novated lease structures meant a large market of secondhand tesla came onstream which "robbed" front line tesla sales, as people realised the battery life was holding up.
There are discussions about how in times past the retained value of a tesla almost went up under supply chain delay. That isn't true now, and so people who before felt a canny buy was a tesla on lease and then sale at lease end to recoup stake now either keep the tesla or went over to the alternatives. And there are plenty: 15-20 ev models in the marketplace in AU now.
Doesn't mean he isn't a complete twat, but then so is Jeff Bezos, we all still use Amazon, notwithstanding his trophy wife lifestyle, and Zuck with his bridge busting super yacht, they're all mildly repellent at best.
