It would be interesting to see a breakdown on costs. Article is very light on details.
westurner•3h ago
By moving to a country with universal healthcare, aren't they paying for all employees to have healthcare at a lower average annual per-capita cost?
Simulacra•2h ago
It could be at a cost saving measure, it's not above a business to do such a thing to save a few pennies
westurner•55m ago
Generate a visualization of healthcare spending by capita by country; with pandas dataframes and Manim Python

And generate an open game engine game to explore healthcare spending by capita by country; to teach the same. With e.g. UPGE (Blender), panda3d, harfang, mujoco_menagerie, Unity, or StageCraft; and then build it in WASM to work on a browser tab with the client GPU

/? per capita healthcare spending by country: https://www.google.com/search?q=per+capita+healthcare+spendi...

Also, the GBP and Euro are up on the USD since January 2025.

What an oddly editorialized version of this headline which does not appear to reflect the conclusion made by the article OR the actual headline of the linked article:

actual headline:

> Is Marvel leaving Georgia? Production shifts to UK spark industry shakeup

piece talking about reasons:

> shifting to the United Kingdom, where lower production costs, especially on wages and employee benefits, are giving studios more bang for their buck, according to the Daily Mail.

looks like differences in wages AND benefits. Lower overall salaries in the UK combined with public healthcare costs via the NHS is a much more nuanced take than "leaving to avoid paying health insurance."

I suppose the conclusion though is the same - that a public option would have prevented this flight of capital. Not necessarily dropping of mandates that employers cover health insurance to remain competitive (which I'm sure some will conclude).

gadders•2h ago
They'll probably offer their employees BUPA anyway (private health insurance available in the UK as a top-up to the NHS).

Actual headline is: "Is Marvel leaving Georgia? Production shifts to UK spark industry shakeup"
