Of course. His sentence was pre-determined. This "trial" was merely for show.
SilverElfin•4mo ago
Is anyone surprised? The Brazilian Supreme Court is incredibly biased and has been engaged in unconstitutional suppression of political opposition. The same requirements they had for social media companies led to young Nepalese overthrowing their government in a few days time. But I guess the Brazilian population has accepted their new authoritarian rule from the judicial bench.

Let’s see what comes of this:

matheusmoreira•4mo ago
Years ago I called it right here on HN. He was already guilty and it was only a matter of time before he was arrested and jailed by his political enemies. That was never in doubt. This is just a meaningless circus meant to pass this country off as "civilized".

What's truly shocking is the kangoroo court they put this guy through. The entire Lula corruption case was thrown out on infinitely lesser technicalities than what transpired here. It really cements the fact that in this country judges = gods, as an actual lawyer told me years ago. Truly disgusting.

> The same requirements they had for social media companies led to young Nepalese overthrowing their government in a few days time.

Yeah. Huge respect for them. Fuck censors.

> But I guess the Brazilian population has accepted their new authoritarian rule from the judicial bench.

This circus is what happens when you resist the judge-kings. Thousands of people have already been sentenced to decades in prison for protesting them. Some have already died in their judicial concentration camps. People routinely get softer sentences for cold blooded murder.

FranzFerdiNaN•4mo ago
He was indeed guilty of trying to commit a coup. And that shouldn’t be allowed.
matheusmoreira•4mo ago
He "tried" to commit a coup? If only. Maybe if he had actually tried it, there would have been an actual reason for this circus. Who knows, he might have actually succeeded and we wouldn't be living under a communist judiciary dictatorship right now.

The real coup was perpetrated by the supreme court itself. Judges have always been literal gods in this cursed land but at least there was a tiny veneer of civilization. It began in 2019 when some magazine ran a damning article on one of these judges. In response to that they launched a "fake news" inquisition where they were the victims, investigators, prosecutors, judges and executioners against unspecified persons for wildcard crimes covering the whole brazilian territory. Thus began the escalating abuses of the court. They just kept usurping more and more powers until they started blatantly violating the constitution. You could literally read the words written on the constitution and watch them do the exact opposite. By now it's gotten to the point they have their own lifetime praetorian guard to protect them, and they have usurped numerous functions of the government. Not a single brazilian voted for these judges, yet they walk all over our senate and legislators by basically making things up as they go along.

Pity this "coup attempt" never actually materialized. More of a counter-coup really. It's just comical to watch Bolsonaro be judged for something he was too much of a coward to pull off. Dude was chilling in Florida while the judge-kings were sentencing everyone who ever supported him to 15+ years in prison for the "coup attempt".

brazukadev•4mo ago
Bolsonaro is a confessed defendant, of course we all knew he would be sentenced.
matheusmoreira•4mo ago
Please. The entire case against Lula and his fellow corrupt communists was thrown out on infinitely lesser technicalities than the circus we just witnessed.

His "confession" merely entails "discussion of judicial means of stopping the election". Yes, "judicial" means. He sought to use article 142 of the constitution which says the purpose of the armed forces is to "guarantee the constitutional powers". Bring order and restore harmony between the legislative, executive and judiciary branches of government.

Total break down of harmony and order between the three powers is the exact state of affairs we currently find ourselves in. Surely you do not believe otherwise? Because discussion can't move forward if you believe otherwise.

brazukadev•4mo ago
The way you think is exactly how he thought. He is a radical extremist that is now under arrest, probably regretting his attempts.
matheusmoreira•4mo ago
Yeah, looks like you believe this country is a democracy. That implies you're willingly ignoring all the logical arguments presented to you that show that it's not. If I'm so wrong about everything, why not simply refute the points that were made? Should be easy.

"Radical extremists" are just people who happen to have self-consistent philosophies and world views. It doesn't matter how "extreme" the conclusion is, so long as it's the right conclusion. If realizing the truth about things makes me an "radical extremist", then by all means.

brazukadev•4mo ago
> Yeah, looks like you believe this country is a democracy.

I'm sure it is. It seems you were fine with a dictator but you did not got what you wished for.

> why not simply refute the points that were made?

Your arguments are so nonsense that any person discussing them with you are just giving you their approve. I don't argue with insane people and I support putting them in jail when they flock together to help overthrow elections.

matheusmoreira•4mo ago
You don't argue because you don't have arguments. You cannot deny the abuses of the supreme court, so you ignore them. They're persecuting the people you hate so it's all fine.

You have stooped to insults and baseless accusations. As such, I don't plan to continue this thread.

brazukadev•4mo ago
> You don't argue because you don't have arguments. You cannot deny the abuses of the supreme court, so you ignore them. They're persecuting the people you hate so it's all fine.

You really get the impression that people that don't engage with your crazy theories don't have arguments? You must be fun at parties.
