The message buried in this article is far worse than the shutdown of Tables: Google cutting 50% of its inhouse R&D team.
Basically, to them, anything not AI is not worth researching on!
To stop all research in all areas except the one currently being on the top of the hype cycle is as silly as growing only one type of tree in your new forest - only to be sidelined by a bug that likes to eat that type.
What about algorithms? What about data management? What about operations research/planning? What about computability? What about formal languages and automata? Which such narrow thinking the top talent is unlikely to stay there (may be it will be good for universities? We'll see).
