It's because he's a member of the Chinese communist party. China plays the long game and he's at the age typically asked to come back.
Especially now that China wants to win the AI race.

If the only reason is "because CCP" - then why is China bothering to provide him with a palatial residence, massive research funding, etc.? They coulda spent all that money on aircraft carriers or data centers or something.
It's almost as if Prof. Zhu didn't actually care about anything but himself and his academic career - and China made him a job offer that he knew American academia would never match.
