If you want the stonks to go up you need economonic output to go up. Hence societies have really two choices. 1. Import poor(er) people who are willing to work and make babies. Hopefully with enough integration the social fabric will not get destroyed, and economy can grow stronger. 2. Close the borders and slowly disappear from earth (both economically and physically). This can only be avoided if robots indeed materialize and can defend and carry the babies of the declining societies.

Population cannot and will not grow indefinitely and that a lower global population is probably our best chance to continue to live on the planet in a non-dystopian way along with a thriving natural environment.

So dealing with a stagnating to slightly decreasing population will happen at some point, anyway. It's just that by kicking the can down the road by encouraging immigration for short term economic "gains" we will also have destroyed our identities, cultures, and people.

Europe has probably passed the point of no return at this point.

whatever1•4mo ago
The developed countries don’t just face population stagnation, but rapid depopulation. This is happening today.

Given that robots cannot give birth to children today (or in the near future) and cannot go to war, I don’t see what is a viable option for those countries that want to close their borders today to protect their “purity”.

mytailorisrich•4mo ago
They don't face "rapid depopulation", they face moderate population decrease in the short term if immigration was to stop. Again, claiming that there is no alternative to mass immigration is trying to avoid short term pain for short term gain at the cost of the whole national future, and that's the most charitable interpretation that avoids theories that this is done on purpose.

Never say never, maybe we'll have a brave new world in the future.

This kind of thinking is result of lack of imagination. People always say there's too many people. People always figure out how to better grow food, build homes and live.
