Publish Your macOS App Outside the App Store

Why jump from one publisher with restrictions and costs (App Store) to another (Gumroad)?

Making a DMG and providing a download link seems trivial if you're already able to develop an app with a customer base.

albertogalca•4mo ago
In my case, I couldn't upload the app directly to the App Store without compromising its user experience. I had to take some extra steps that I wasn't happy about.

Regarding the provider, I totally agree — it's not the best option. However, I didn't want to deal with payments at the outset. How would you approach this?

leakycap•4mo ago
I understand not wanting to deal with payments if it is a subscription - ongoing payments, especially small amounts, are not cost- or time-effective to collect.

I don't mind paying a distribution fee for things that help me, but as a somewhat-informed techy I don't have great feelings about buying from Gumroad (based on past experiences where the items I bought were substandard quality).

My question wasn't why not the App Store (I get that) so much as why play in anyone's sandbox if you don't have to? I'm glad you found something that works.

albertogalca•4mo ago
Like you, I’m not a big fan of Gumroad. I’ll be checking out other options soon.

I don’t mind paying a fee if it helps avoid annoyances too.

Ideally, I’d like to upload directly to the App Store without disrupting my current UX. Let's see if I can find a good solution for this :)
