Seems like he doesn't understand the meaning of "cash strapped".

I make my own "latte" before leaving the house. Total cost --- maybe 25 cents and 2-3 minutes.

As opposed to $5 and 10 minutes waiting at Starbucks.

Just for fun, ask your Starbucks friends to justify their patronage and behold the utter nonsense they unleash. It often boils down to the fact that they don't really like coffee and they aren't smart enough to add their own syrup.

There are different kinds of cash-strapped and it doesn't surprise me that a fortune.com writer considers someone cash-strapped but still able to purchase a Starbucks.

As someone who has actually been cash-strapped before, you don't have the gas money to get to a Starbucks much less the desire to spend $7-$15 for something because of customer service.

I've never seen fellow Americans be so out of touch with each other as right now.

Either that, or this article is simply a headline focused on shaping the opinion of the target audience.

This struck me too. Starbucks sells an optional luxury good, and when money is tight, optional luxury goods are (or should be) the first things people jettison.

When I've been broke, I wouldn't have even considered buying anything that Starbucks (or similar) sells. I'm buying less of actual necessities such as food, and the price of one latte can buy several meals worth of basic foodstuffs. Even if I decide to splurge and buy an occasional fancy coffee drink, I'd be getting it from a place that makes better ones than Starbucks.

But I suspect he's using "cash-strapped" in the sense of "a temporary cash-flow problem" when most normal people will interpret the term as meaning "actually broke".
