There's a certain irony in Comey being the target here. His announcements about investigating Hillary Clinton for her email server irregularities, a few days before the election in 2016, are widely thought to have swung the result to Trump. (A few days later, Comey re-closed the investigation with no charges filed.)

It's not clear how much that actually mattered. And I believe that Comey was doing what he felt was ordinary procedure, not with the goal of manipulating the election for Trump.

Nonetheless, Trump certainly doesn't have any reason to think that Comey is opposed to him. And yet here we are.
