Ask HN: What is everyone's thoughts on renting out personal GPU compute?

Been wondering about this for a bit, but not sure what the viability is for such a thing. We all have some amount of Nvidia gaming GPU's lying at home, which of course are used primarily for gaming. I was thinking of building something that rents out those GPU's and create a distributed marketplace of sorts where folks with GPU's could sell compute to those who need it. With a large enough network of users, it could become a distributed cloud where no single org owns the large swath of compute. It doesn't necessarily have to be on the blockchain. Where does everyone stand on this?

Tried it with Mining pools in the Bitcoin era, didn't work.

mining if I understand it, enabled people to find a new block for the chain. But compute rental would act like a cloud server pool of ec2 spot instances. Incentives for renters are people paying extra bucks to use thier compute, while those who rent could bypass the cloud
