AI video generation is a threat to freelance editors

6•jamessmithe•4mo ago
Ai generated videos are changing the whole dimension of video creation these days. Recently, I needed some video for projects and I was searching for some tools that can get the job done for me. When I found the tool, my mind was just bloen away with the videos I got from there. The quality and clarity of the videos was simply awesome. I mostly used synthesia, invideo and lunabloomai. When i saw the result, I had this question in my mind. What is the future of the freelance editors since these tools are giving such awesome results? What do you guys think?

I was just listening to a podcast[0] talking about how the number of folks needed to create a movie is going to decrease by 90%, in part because of AI.

I think these tools will absolutely hit the freelance market. More video will be produced, and the video involving humans will be at a higher standard.

The tools give you a draft. If you are an editor, you should be able to make them even better, using the generated video as raw source material. If anything, AI-generated video will make editors even more important, having to fix the slop, just like coders have to fix the slop.

We're a good distance away from that point

I don't agree with the premise. Would you like to share some examples of what has wow'd you?

I haven't seen AI productions that got close to what a good video editor could do with a brain and a decent NLE. AI production without a talented human involved are very much slop right now.

Recently, I needed some video for projects

If you were not considering hiring a free-lance editor, then the impact was zero.

If you were considering hiring an editor for the first time, the impact was slight.

Only if you have a track record of hiring freelance editors is there a meaningful impact, and only to the degree you have an established team. Otherwise it’s just (potentially) cheaper Fivrr.

Because successful freelancers are successful because of relationships, skill and judgement. They are successful because thet are able to produce something better than the description, able to improve the description, and not hallucinate. They are able to give clients what they need even when the client doesn’t know they need it. Good luck.

AI is not a master as a editor. it just create some simple video.
SurofMani•4mo ago
I don’t think AI tools can fully replace video editors, at least not right now. I’ve tried multiple AI video generators like Synthesia, InVideo, and Veed.oi and while they produce some decent, basic videos (good for fun or quick content), they still lack the accuracy and attention to detail that professional video editors bring to the table. For proper content creation, you definitely need the expertise of an editor who can fine-tune visuals, sound, pacing, and storytelling. These AI tools are great, but they’re nowhere near replacing the creative touch and nuanced editing that pros provide.

Pretty much the opposite. Freelancers will create masterpieces alone
muzani•4mo ago
AI video generation at this point feels like stop motion animation. You'd think that you can get more done with less skill. But if you have a vision, it's more work to implement it.

A lot of AI image/video tools seem to be approaching stock images. They're beautiful. But they feel unnatural. I've seen people try to do films with these, but for example, movement feels too "gradient". There's a lot of focus on things and composition which are simply not important.
