Ask HN: How do you use AI to convince people you didn't use AI to get an idea?

1•amichail•4mo ago
Maybe after getting an idea on your own, you used AI to check for novelty, refine it, and write it up, but that's different from having an AI give you the idea in the first place.

Why not be honest?

Why do you need AI to convince someone you didn’t use AI? This seems like it would work against your case.

amichail•4mo ago
Why would being honest convince them?

Instead, I could challenge people to use AI to come up with the same idea, but they could argue that due to the randomness inherent in AI output, this wouldn't convince them.

al_borland•4mo ago
You said you had an idea, then used AI to refine it. Why not say that?

If you don’t feel using AI is acceptable to use in the way you’re using it, where you feel the need to lie about it, then don’t use AI.

Trying to use AI even more to assist with the lie just makes it even worse.

Poomba•4mo ago
Use first principles in your reasoning. Back your claims up with as much data as you can. It doesnt really matter if you used AI or not
asdfbank•4mo ago
That's like asking how do you convince people you dug a hole without using a shovel... who cares what tools were used unless you're in some kind of game with such rules. the shovel is just a tool and it didn't dig the hole, you did.

Lots of ideas are new to the person coming up with them, only to find out that it was invented 50 years ago, doesn't mean you cheated. AI or not, just own it.

amichail•4mo ago
Nowadays, people will not take your idea seriously if they think you used AI in any way — even if it is just to write it up after thinking of it yourself.
JohnFen•4mo ago
Maybe so, but I don't think that being deceptive is the right response to that. Even ignoring the ethics of being deceptive, if others find out about the habit then nobody will have trust in anything you write after that.
