I remember reading somewhere (can't find the source now) that we generally know that during tool use, we are able to treat the tool as an extension of the body -whether it's a simple tool (like a hammer or a knife) or more complex tools (like a car or a crane).
This is an evolutionary or developmental advantage I assume.
