Bitwarden is in the free camp if you install vaultwarden. Not sure it's an entirely good fit for the "us alternative" message.

The issue with bitwarden/vaultwarden is how simple it is to set it up insecurely and use it for years without knowing it.
I've inherited clients with various *warden setups and they almost always have at least one critical security or setup failure that makes the whole setup a farce.

Not sure thats the issue thereg is on, but I get your vibe. For a non-US you could pay half a hundred different EU located people to do facilities & s/w management for you on this.

Yes, I agree with you that this isn't thereg's point - just worth considering the importance of 24x7 security on this, so maybe don't self-manage it unless you're available 24x7.
This is doubly more important if setting it up for someone else, and the two wardens you mention make it trivially simple to feel like you did everything right and have major security issues
