Ask HN: SciFi Recommendations

3•Awesomedonut•4mo ago
Any scifi recommendations? I'm specifically looking for works that do something interesting with fictional technology (which is the point of this genre, but I've seen a lot that just slap on aliens and call it a day). I have no preference for hard/soft and any medium is fine.

The SciFi Masterworks series includes some of the best SF writing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SF_Masterworks

Piggybacking off this, "old" (pre 1980) sci-fi tends to hold up surprisingly well, for me, at least

Great collection. I have read at least half of them. I'm going to bookmark this and read the rest, re-read some of them.

Wikipedia article mentions also these overlapping series that have some great additions.

I looked also Gollancz Classic SF (1986–1987) https://store.gollancz.co.uk/collections/classic-science-fic...

and VGSF Classics (1988–1990) mentioned. https://sfandfantasy.co.uk/php/gallery-a.php?subsection=100

I always feel like the Hyperion cantos doesn't get enough love. There are some fantasy elements mixed in, time dilation and long haul space travel plays an important part of the story in interesting ways (later in the series)

Neal Stephenson’s novels fit your criteria.
