Ask HN: Do You Struggle with ArXiv Categories Too?

After years of publishing research that straddles mathematics and computer science, I’ve stopped trying to fit into one category. I examine the interdisciplinary researcher’s dilemma - from entropy appearing in both information theory and thermodynamics, to learning theory. How do you navigate academic silos when your work refuses to fit in one box?

The library is like that. I got used to the idea that works on certain topics could be distributed across different places. In the LC system, for instance, machine vision could be around QA76 or in the T’s somewhere in electronics or optics. It’s particularly bad there because the call numbers are used to physically place books in one exact place.
It’s just so weird that in Dewey computers are stuffed in right after books about ufos and the Loch Ness monster but most of the rest of the occult is in the 130s even though some of it could go at the end of the 200s but hardly ever does.
