Show HN: YNOT – Free, Open-Source YouTube Downloader

https://james-see.github.io/ynot/
14•jamescampbell•4mo ago
Hey HN! I built YNOT, a simple cross-platform YouTube downloader with a GUI.

It's powered by yt-dlp and completely free/open-source (WTFPL license).

Key features: - Simple GUI - just paste URL and download - Downloads HD/4K videos - Cross-platform (Windows, macOS, Linux) - No ads, no tracking, completely private - Lightweight and fast

GitHub: https://github.com/james-see/ynot

I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions!

How does it stack up against jdownloader?
jamescampbell•4mo ago
I haven't done much market research, but I will check it out. I was focused on building it fast and getting it out there.
alexander2002•4mo ago
Are there any additional option in the ui aside from the youtube link such as downloading a specific portion of a video.
jamescampbell•4mo ago
I was thinking of adding some github issues for features. Another one would be downloading the transcript file (which is easy to grab btw).
regsvr32•4mo ago
The UI looks great—really nice little tool.
jamescampbell•4mo ago
Thank you for the feedback.

A vibecoded gui for yt-dlp?
jamescampbell•4mo ago
It was a challenge on X. A person was making a PAID desktop app and I said Ill make an open source one in a day. So I did.
jamescampbell•4mo ago
I firmly believe tools like yt-dlp should not be wrapped as PAID things. Tools like that should be free for all to use.
