SV is in large part to blame for Trump being there. The crypto and VC types are MAGA types and frankly, Democratic retaliation in the future should focus heavily on those groups.
adamors•4mo ago
There might not be a Democratic retaliation anytime soon. Orban has been in power for 15 years in Hungary, and Trump is adopting a lot of his playbook. In addition, Trump also has a paramilitary force.
ctack•4mo ago
It’s possible they also see the storm coming and are too scared to do anything either.
throwawaysleep•4mo ago
No. Many of them like Marc Andreessen, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos were all aboard.
apothegm•4mo ago
“Retaliation” is not the word I would use. Retaliation is the wrong reason for any decision in domestic politics. The right’s narrative of retaliation for imagined wrongs is a big part of the reason we’re in this position in the first place. (“The cruelty is the point.”)

On the other hand, re-leveling the playing field will be important — if the playing field even still exists in a few years.

gsky•4mo ago
They would not have funded Trump in the first place if they loved the democracy.
zickle•4mo ago
Not a chance they will. The one thing everyone knows is that Silicon Valley cares only about profit and power. It is indifferent to democratic freedoms and actively hostile to them if it costs them money, and it's hand in glove with the rising tide of authoritarianism.
