They have a much larger economy and can essentially either buy out the majority of businesses in Taiwan or employ the majority of the citizens.
The youth in Taiwan don't know or care about these things and will eventually just be another part of China within a decade or so.
American leftists love China as well, so I doubt Taiwan would have much support in the US. I used to run a meetup group and hardcore leftists just loved China and the way they governed.
One guy I talked to waited 6 hours to see the tomb of Mao and cried at the beauty.
They also loved Russia/the Soviet union, until it was associated with Trump.
