>A notable far-right presence inevitably results in the community becoming repulsive to a large part of its core audience. It’s happened on Usenet, DC++, IRC, Skype, PHPbb forums, Twitter, Reddit, Discord, and it will keep happening in the future.

I read most of the article, nodding along, till I got to the above part when it finally started talking about topics I know quite a bit about. The idea that usenet, IRC, all PHPbb forums, etc, became repulsive due to far right presence is simply false. Usenet was killed by the RIAA/MPAA. IRC is alive and well (and libera (the largest network) is extremely liberal but still tolerates opposing views as any healthy community should).

It makes me question what other falsehoods the author is so boldly and confidently stating due to lack of lived experience. We should keep in mind this article a meta-review rather than direct information.

guitarbill•24m ago
As far as I can tell, the author isn't claiming e.g. all of Usenet or IRC was affected. Only that this issue has been happening to communities for a long time in many different online places.

> Without mincing words - DHH is prolific at espousing white nationalist and eugenicist views with a pseudointellectual slant, while trying to pretend he’s doing something else.

News flash, normal people are done with this type of slander, hyperbole and lies. The extreme fringe left once enjoyed the mirage of dominance through big tech enforcement; that’s over now.

For my part, I bought a 1LPC to run Omarchy as my main desktop. I absolutely love it.

lasersail•1h ago
This is a surprising read. I recently listened to Lex Fridman’s 6+ hour conversation with DHH, and don’t recall any mention of white nationalism, eugenics, or far-right adjacent topics. In 6 hours DHH presented himself as a passionate, opinionated, and intensely intelligent programmer & product builder.
Arubis•34m ago
If DHH wasn’t also those things, he wouldn’t have ended up with the platform he has. He’s incredibly sharp and a successful, prolific technician and product owner.

He also broadcasts a nativist and frequently white supremacist worldview that’s pretty socially destructive. https://web.archive.org/web/20250925050154/https://world.hey... is recent and in his own words.

periodjet•34m ago
This is madness, but probably healthy. These people are fully outing themselves as the modern day QAnon weirdos; people with fringe conspiracist beliefs who are very loud but haven’t yet realized that normal people just look at them askance and keep a polite distance.

The fever has broken, and their abuse of terms like “fascist” and “far-right” have left them unable to appeal to a wider audience. We normies are wise to their game and just want to get on with life.

Framework will be unaffected by this, DHH will be unaffected by this, and the loud weirdos will just continue being loud in their weird cornerns.
