Question is - why hire these days at all? Productivity of coders have skyrocketed, just keep best of those you already have, fire the worst, and milk the best for as long as you need them because they all know the current job is probably the last one ever so they will never ask for a raise. Everyone in this profession is either already forced out (bad ones), or is looking for a way out before they are forced to (but few will find it).
Everyone who touches code now has to ask themselves a question: "what to do when it ends?"

I still don't think that AI is that advanced.

It’s definitely not, but I think OP is probably reflecting on the state of the job market.

Surely there's plenty of work that AI can't and won't do for a long time if ever! And plenty of coders will be employed for a very long time to come. Thing is, it doesn't take too much oversupply for price to become essentially zero, even with all those people who are now leaving the industry. In a few years even senior coders will realise that burger flipping or DoorDash-ing makes similar money and will find themselves at crossroads.

I think cutting down on the supply is part and parcel of cutting immigration and education spending.
