According to internal Instagram data, the teens who are already feeling bad about their bodies are the same ones being fed more “eating disorder–adjacent” content. Probably because this helps drive engagement to push more harmful stuff to vulnerable users.

The algorithm for instagram from my experience does push more content towards you related to your interests including your challenges. It just depends if that content makes your challenges worse or not.
For example, if you're having relationship challenges, it pushes more content related to that, of which that content can do more harm than good due to misinformation etc. It can also paint the situation in a good light or a bad light, it can help you heal but it can also help you shift blame to something else.
