Comparison: H.264 vs. H.265/HEVC vs. VP9

H.264 vs H.265 vs VP9 are covered to help you understand the strengths, weaknesses, and practical uses of each video codec.
ZeroCool2u•3mo ago
Bit odd they don't add more info about AV1 or even AV2. They mention that it's objectively better and the future, but real time encoders are holding it back. Would still have like to see some data points for comparison in something so otherwise comprehensive.
mondainx•3mo ago
That info can be found here: https://www.red5.net/blog/av1-vs-h264/
ksec•3mo ago
For reference, Brazil have adopted VVC / H.266 + LCEVC as their TV 3.0 codec preference.

AV2 will be out soon.

mondainx•3mo ago
AV2 may be out "soon", but if roll-out and adoption of AV1 is any guide, it won't be widely available very soon at all. I applause the promise of AV2 and AV1 is great, but its just not a soon thing IMHO.
ksec•3mo ago
Agree. I am hoping they have learned their lesson not only just on roll out but a lot of other things.
