This isn't by chance. Cyprus has very strong connections to anglosphere and very highly-educated population with open minded attitude. No surprise there. Research labs are also investing.

You meant to say - economy entirely based on online scams, porn, illegal "trading" and gambling? We have full office buildings where people work round the clock phishing money out of people to "invest" into Forex "trading" and then brag about how many suicides each had among their clients this week. Is this the future European digital paradise lmao?

Please dial it down. You must be mistaken with another country! Cyprus is a member of the European Union and there are very strict regulations on FinTech and other gaming industries.
This is a bit old. Ecosystem changing rapidly. Currently, FinTechs operate under quite strict laws and regulations. Transparency is also improving.
I think datacenters and supercomputing facilities are other core areas that were in talks with Silicon Valley veterans; because there is an established scientific university research environment locally. Due to particle physics, some groups are members of the CMS from CERN (Google it 'CMS CERN Cyprus').

Ecosystem is evolving, it is more diverse than fintech. Such as computer games, both mobile and console start-ups are thriving. Recent directions, attract more investments on data centres and supercomputing; it will improve within the coming years, much more pronounced.
