Ask HN: Why didn't online speed-dating catch on?

1•puppion•3mo ago
Why isn't online speed-dating main stream? I noticed there are some apps that try to do it but they are not popular at all.

To me this seems so much more efficient than the endless swiping and pointless texting.

I'm thinking about trying to create and promote such an app myself. WDYT?

because it is 100% wrong approach for that task

there is nothing about rushed decisions and pair-bonding that ‘goes together’

those without relevant stories of regret quickly acquire them

Seems like such a thing combines the worst aspects of online dating and the worst aspects of speed dating. I don't see the point of it.
einsteinx2•3mo ago
I’d argue that Tinder/Bumble/etc are online speed dating. Instead of the old way of setting up a long dating profile and sending a ton of messages that get ignored, you just quickly swiped, find matches, have a quick chat to see if it’s worth meeting up, then meet for drinks. If you’re spending a ton of time texting before meeting “you’re holding it wrong” so to speak. After a few messages it should be pretty clear if there’s any connection, that’s speed dating in my book.
