Tell HN: Posteo.de email provider is down

6•npteljes•3mo ago
Posteo.de email service, and every webservice associated with the domain, website, blog etc are all down, for a few hours now. https://posteo-status.de/ shows that there are currently no problems, which is of course not true. It has been a long time since I saw an honest status page, but it still hurts. They have no other presence on the internet as far as I know, so there are no news.

Frankly, I am debating alternatives, even though I have been happy with them for years. It is just scary to be without email, and communication at the same time. People who don't use Google, what do you use? Is it ever down?

Been a happy customer of Fastmail for ~10 years now. Nice web and mobile interfaces. I've never been impacted by downtime in that time (to my knowledge).

I find it really weird that we've been left without email for so long and no updates from them.
npteljes•3mo ago
I'm frankly debating how hurt I am over this. Obviously nothing happened to me because of a sudden some-hour outage, but I organize almost my entire online communication around email, and being without it was freaky. I didn't need them, but some online logins wouldn't have worked, business emails could have bounced, etc. I have never experienced email not working.

Im don't notice anything and just signed into webmail on a fresh browser to test ?
npteljes•3mo ago
After around ~5 hours of downtime, it was up again, around 12:00 CEST. When it was down, I have checked their server with many "is the website down" services, and there was one that told me that from certain regions, it was available, even when to me, it was down.
everfrustrated•3mo ago
The only email provider I trust would be Fastmail. They've been in business ages and contribute back by pushing newer jmap standards. Their web UI is very lightweight, slick and full of features.

They've finally implemented offline support in mobile app which was the last major missing feature I've been wanting.

They're not a "privacy" provider tho. So if you're one of those keep looking (private email is oxymoron but whatever)

They've had maybe only 1 major outage that I've noticed in the 5 or so years I've been with them and it was resolved in a day.

npteljes•3mo ago
I like Fastmail as well. Funnily enough, their fast loading website is a positive sign to me.

Do you remember if there was any communication regarding that outage? Posteo's record is similar, from what I can tell. This is the first major outage for 7 years that I have experienced, and if I look at it from an uptime perspective, that's really good. Overall the service was out for 5 hours or so.

I have been using Tuta for a long time and I highly reccommend it! Responsive support and solid privacy.
