Tell HN: iPadOS 26 bricked my iPad Pro

13•designerbenny•3mo ago
iPadOS 26 bricked my 6th generation iPad Pro 12.9".

About a week after the official update launched, I updated my iPad to the new ipadOS. Afterwards, my device began to get incredibly hot even at idle. The device began to charge intermittently and eventually stopped recognizing any USB C cables at all. Additionally, the battery drained to empty overnight multiple times.

This device was not exhibiting any abnormal heating or charging behavior at all until after that update. From update to a few days later, my device was rendered a brick. Even considering that devices often do indexing and so on after an update, this situation is abnormal (as a person who has owned many iPads).

It has taken me this long to make a post because I wanted to give Apple the chance to rectify this with their official process. I first went to the Genius Bar and then spent several days discussing with phone support until they finally decided to take the device. Apple is refusing to take any responsibility for this.

After my device died, I did a quick search to see if anyone else had experienced overheating and quickly found this post [1]. Mind you, my device was not merely getting warm; it was getting dangerously hot. This seems as far as I can tell to be either planned obsolescence or negligence.

I'm mostly leaving this as a PSA as the only option from Apple is to do a device swap or to buy a new device.

You updated to the new public release or to the new beta?

I’ve got same device as you and haven’t had the same issues.

designerbenny•3mo ago
It was the public release for me, though apparently that person in the other thread had experienced similar issues on the beta months ago.

I was never on the beta.

CamperBob2•3mo ago
Honestly, sounds like you have a defective battery that just coincidentally failed when you did the upgrade.
designerbenny•3mo ago
Apple explicitly confirmed that the battery was fine.
CamperBob2•3mo ago
Correction, some kid at the 'Genius Bar' confirmed it.

What you describe is exactly what I've experienced on more than one iPhone when the battery failed... but yeah, good luck convincing them to swap it out under warranty if they're certain that's not the problem.

designerbenny•3mo ago
I don’t doubt it.

Regardless, the device overheating to this extent is a serious issue regardless of what causes it. It’s on Apple to make sure they design safe hardware and responsibly release working software.

hexbin010•3mo ago
Thanks for the warning!

I had a perfectly fine iPhone die after a minor release too. They refused to take responsibility and blamed bad hardware. It was only 2.5 years old.

I've gone right off major Apple software updates. No way am I upgrading to Tahoe. The blatent planned obsolescence and poor software quality is getting too much.

Stasshe•3mo ago
Fortunately, Mine did not become a brick, but I'm sure that iOS v26 is the most terrible version ever. it's just a trash.
