The title contains the first of 25 question marks you'll find in this two-page article. Like much of philosophy, you won't find many answers.

It's fun to think about though. If the (meta) universe were infinitely old then why hasn't it all diffused into background noise? Maybe once in a bazillion years there's an improbable quantum fluctuation - a big bang. It's interesting to think that we and the entire universe we know of exists in a tiny blip in between almost unimaginable spans of nothingness.

Fun indeed! If there is no universe, there is no one to ask the question. If there is a universe, the the question is inevitable. It's enough to make the brain hurt!
