WGU Reputation in Canada

1•bchrome•3mo ago
Do people see it as a diploma mill up here in Canada? I'm 22 and just about fully committed to the new networking - cisco degree but I'm worried that:

People will look up the school, see that it's primarily online, and immediately discard my resume in favor of a local college/university.

I'm also just generally scared about the IT sector. I watched a video of a programmer simply running a script to delete and redeploy 1000s of linux machines in a split second. There was an issue with one of the boxes and he didnt even need to troubleshoot it, but that entire scenario is outside the scope of this question.

>Do people see it as a diploma mill up here in Canada?

I've never heard of WGU, but yes Canada has many diploma mills.

>I'm 22 and just about fully committed to the new networking - cisco degree but I'm worried that:

Network security is the new hot job, the network engineering classes are empty. If you're learning regular configs, it's oldschool. The new way is configuring switches in github and ansible pushing the configs.

You also need your certs in this, the actual schooling matters alot less.

I dont think your fear is IT. I think it's that you don't know your purpose in life. Something schools fail to teach and so it's common at your age.

https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/seven_ways_to_...

When you know your purpose. The obstacles in the path are the path. There's nothing to fear because you know where you're going.

You were spot on with your guess that I don't know what I should do with my life.

I was homeless for a brief while, dropped out of school and I now inadvertently have a tech support job. I don't know what I want to do with my life anymore, as I've spent the past year stagnant and not learning any skills.

Meanwhile the IT sector is almost married with programming, something I've always enjoyed but struggled with.

I'm just venting but thank you for the reply.
