Ask HN: How can AI responsibly support preventive mental health care?

1•Satu_dev•3mo ago
I’ve been exploring how artificial intelligence could be applied to preventive mental health care — not to replace human support, but to help detect early risk factors, personalize guidance, and provide scalable support before problems escalate.

This area seems both promising and full of open questions. For example:

How can we ensure ethical and safe data use when dealing with such sensitive signals?

What kinds of AI models (e.g., passive sensing, language modeling) might truly help in prevention — rather than just diagnosis?

Where’s the line between useful nudging and intrusive intervention?

I’m particularly interested in how others see the balance between innovation and responsibility here. Have you seen research, tools, or frameworks that seem to get it right?

I’ve also put together a short (1-minute) survey for US participants — link in the first comment — but mainly I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this intersection of AI, ethics, and mental health.

Thanks for taking the time.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas so far — this is incredibly valuable.

For anyone interested, here’s the short survey I mentioned (US participants only): https://bit.ly/4qJYG4T

It’s part of early research to understand how people actually experience and perceive AI-assisted therapy — what feels promising, what feels risky, and where the boundaries of trust might be.

No signup or marketing — just 5 quick questions to help us learn what people genuinely expect from AI-supported mental health services.

Really appreciate any input you’re willing to share.

Busted link. Note it is a trope in Japanese fiction about VR that VR MMOs have mental health AIs in them, see

Thanks for flagging. Here’s the correct link (should work now): https://bit.ly/4qJYG4T

It’s a short, 5-question research survey about how people perceive AI-assisted therapy — what feels promising, what feels risky, and what matters most to users. No signup, no marketing — just research.

Still busted.

Pro tip: off-brand domains like "online" and "xyz" are frequently blocked by ISPs and are a certain way to be a low agency NPC. Get a respectable domain like "com" or "org" and don't be ashamed to direct directly to it.
