Well ICQ/Yahoo/MSN messenger did not need AWS.

The modern apps are full of unnecessary features not because anyone asks or even uses these features, but because its become easy for devs to roll them out.

I use Signal only for initial contact/handshake. After that its on private client not touching any cloud. If Signal dies tomorrow, its not the end of the world.

Posts on her thread it looks like the usual pile on of experts and opinions and grudges (against moxie) rather than any acknowledgement of the substance of what she says about why they use a hyperscaler.

I could wish for them to have some model which ran on diverse hyperscalers at the same time but that's adding complexity. Its CAP theorem "pick any 2 problems" stuff.
