I'm a great coder - if I do say so myself. The issue is that's not where I add the greatest value to the organization. Learning the actual business problems that when solved will truly transform the business, investigating new technologies and assessing how they may solve these problems, and doing enterprise solution architecture - that's where I provide the greatest value. So I code at night just so I can stay abreast with the tools and technologies my dev teams are using. That's what makes me a great engineer.

do you not lose your sh*t working extra hours after work...?

I've been like that most of my life. Even back when I was young and going to school and thus school was my job, I was "working" extra hours after "work." That's one of the things I really enjoy about IT work - I've never run out of new things to learn.
