Show HN: Learn (and maintain) multiple languages in style

https://phrasing.app/?showhn
2•barrell•1h ago
Hello hn -

As a polyglot I've spend thousands of hours studying languages, and about half of those were spent dreaming of the 'perfect app'. I wanted spaced repetition that looked good, was less stressful to use, in an app that supported all my languages (including minority ones).

For the past two years I've been working on just such an application, Phrasing. I've now been using it daily for several months and it's ready to be shared.

Phrasing works with a concept called "Expressions". These are like flashcards on steroids: they're multilingual, interactive, heavily annotated and fully explained. Most importantly, they're interconnected, meaning all instances of a given word are linked. This means you can efficiently learn from long, complex sentences.

I recommend using the clozeword modality to learn the words. This will teach you them one at a time, and as you use phrasing, the algorithm will adapt to you and get downright addictive. I promise it's the most enjoyable SRS algorithm you'll ever use :)

HOW YOU CAN TRY PHRASING FOR FREE:

Free accounts officially aren't supported, but for now you can try Phrasing for free:

1. Find some free expressions: there are currently two ways to do this. Either from step four of the onboarding flow, or manually from one of the islands in the island tab (i.e. https://fluency.phrasing.app/@sterling/welcome-basics)

2. Bookmark the expression's translations: click on the bookmark in the lower left of the expression, and click on the translations you would like to learn (or click on "Learn all" to turn them all on)

3. Go learn! Open clozeword and try to guess/recall the word. If you don't know the word, just click reveal and try to remember it for next time!

4. Not a required step, but be sure to click on the shapes icon at some point :)

I'll be around to answer any questions in the comments! Enjoy

PS: if this project is interesting to anyone who is looking to set off on their own, I’m actively looking for a co-founder :D
