Magic Links

It's a user, personally, I hate these things. I almost always have my password vault at my fingertips. And I just want to paste my damned password. Instead now I got to flip over to my email app, hope to hell that the email actually arrives in a timely manner, etc. If it was available is an option? Fine. But I've seen people to use these almost exclusively is the login mechanism. Hate it. It's not that it doesn't work, it's just inconvenient for me more often than not.

I think that it's horrible for magic links to be the only option, especially for mobile first applications. There's also issues with cookies and webviews and system browsers in that scenario that make it a bad fit.

But for apps that I'm just trying out or not very committed to, creating detritus in my password vault is worse than toggling to a different app.

I hate the actual incarnation of passkeys because they're designed to take control from the user. But I hate this even more, take control and promote the bad practice of clicking weird links from email. When my bank sends me an email I never even use the link to open their homepage, I'll know where to find it. Bypasses phishing attempts from the bad guys as well as the lovely tracking parameters the other bad guys put in there.

How is a magic link request different from a forgot password request?

They both:

- are initiated by the end user

- grant account access

- are delivered via email (or text)

Or are you just as frustrated with account recovery/forgot password emails?
