Ask HN: How are you preparing for retirement?

6•retretret•2mo ago
(Burner account)

How do you see yourself keeping your current lifestyle in retirement. Have you saved enough in your 401k, brokerage? What passive income streams are you counting on? Long term care seems like a proper scam and any decent health Insurance will run ~3k in monthly premiums. Not looking for specifics, just sense checking how prepared you feel personally. I don’t.

The last thing I want out of retirement is maintaining my current lifestyle. Which is not to suggest that my current lifestyle is lacking (or not lacking) just that the last thing I want in life is complacency. Everything I have worked for in life for the past decade is buying a boat so I can be blown about the oceans so when I get old enough for the retirement home I can just put up the sails and end my life looking up at the sky.

All the various projections say I’m on track, and I met with some financial planners who looked at all my stuff and put a conservative plan together. I’ve been going above and beyond what they said to do for savings, so hopefully that’s good.

That said, I don’t think I’ll ever feel secure or feel like I’m doing enough. I could always do more. I also don’t have any kids, so that worries me and makes me think I need to have even more saved, and make sure there are people or institutions I can trust to makes sure I’m taken care of and comfortable, if I don’t have family to advocate for me when I’m old. Either that or I need to actually put some effort into starting a family before it’s too late.

I wish I had done more to setup systems in my early years of working, even when the numbers were small. I still hit the mark on those estimates of how much a person should have saved by a given age, but I feel like I could have and should have done so much more. But that’s easy to say in hindsight.

I should also probably be taking better care of myself, as that is likely to pay dividends when it comes to healthcare costs and overall quality of life.
