To me this reads as the 'stupid' UK legislation forcing the free-market to act where they never would have acted otherwise.

And just like that an ostensible friend of freedom becomes an overt (and incredibly powerful) enemy.

Progress towards this type of initiative + ubiquitous AI integration are the reason I hoard old tech.

This was an inevitable outcome once the political class realized there may be a technical primitive to even desire this sort of thing. This is why shit like device based attestation should never have been pursued. It should have been treated as anathema, and anyone actually working on it ostracized by peers.

Tech is one of the few things where we can truly completely undermine social structures before we're ready. This is one of those sorts of things.
