I know this topic has come up before, but I’d like to hear your thoughts on the licensing model for TimeScaleDB. Do you trust that it will remain free and open source in the long term?
For context, we recently had a very negative experience with Camunda Zeebe. We had been using it since version 1, but starting with v8.5, it became a commercial product, requiring direct contact for pricing—which is usually not a good sign. Here’s an example of the kind of statements you can find regarding Camunda’s license: https://github.com/camunda/camunda/issues/3770. This situation feels very similar to the TimeScaleDB license.
Now that there’s a company behind TimeScaleDB, what are the chances it will follow the same path? Another example is IdentityServer4, which was the standard for OIDC in .NET and suddenly became commercial.
Personally, I find this approach quite dishonest: companies wait until users are deeply invested, then introduce fees—knowing that migration costs are high.
