> A system-level age flag becomes another point of control tied directly to the platforms that mediate how billions of people use software.

> Open ecosystems would feel the pressure. Independent browsers, community distributions of Linux, and other user-driven projects could be pushed toward government-linked identity requirements simply to maintain compatibility.

> Centralizing verification at the device level might reduce repetitive data exposure, but it also concentrates power in a handful of firms that already hold vast collections of behavioral data. People should not be forced to use Big Tech tools to access the open internet.

I was born in 1985. Most kids I went to school with had access to the public internet, which had scary content like porn. Amazingly, most everyone managed to survive and thrive. When does parenting come into play here? Why must we all give up our civil liberties to “protect” children from going to sites with adult content?

The older I get the more incredibly naive this perspective seems to me. Never in history has “freedom” been defined in a way that was this nihilistic before. We can either try and answer some of these questions, or die trying.

Something I’ve started to internalize is, every time there’s been an invention… the book, movies, television, the internet, where everyone clutched pearls on how it was going to be the downfall of civilized engagement. They were right.
