Smart move. The Constellation class was going to be too little, too late. The threat environment has escalated since the initial design and with even terrorist groups like the Houthis having access to advanced precision weapons the Constellation would no longer have the area air-defense capability necessary to act as an effective convoy escort. The limiting factor right now is shipyard capacity so better to devote it toward building more capable Arleigh Burke Flight III ships.
Every major recent Navy shipbuilding program has been a disaster. Besides this latest debacle, the LCS, DDG-1000, and CVN-78 classes have also basically failed. Hopefully this move signals a course correction.
