Americans are holding onto devices longer than ever and it's costing the economy

What a dumb piece, basically promoting consumerism in the name of "the economy". I think it's great that people are starting to wake up, waste less, and recognize the hollowness of perpetual upgrades.
1970-01-01•2mo ago
Yes. That upgrade narrative worked a for quite a long time as things were evolving, but these days we're at a hot garbage consumerism stage. And we know it.

Apple: Wow yet another new iPhone! How do we do it? Apple Intelligence!! Are you buying 2 or 3 today?!

Consumer: None for me, thanks.

Not saying that you're doing this, but isn't this the same as saying "it's okay for the nuclear launch systems to use 8" floppy drives."

It's perfectly okay if you are. And if you aren't then there's some place between "it's okay for missiles to use Series/1s from the 1970s" and "it's okay for people to use a 2 year old phone." Might be interesting to figure out where that point is.

For what it's worth, I think it's perfectly fine for US Nuclear Missiles to use IBM Series/1s, even with Floppy Drives. I had this wonderful idea that somewhere in the mountains was an old guy hand-winding copper wires around an iron core to manually make a read/write head for a floppy drive to sell to Raytheon to sell to the DoD to replace worn out IBM floppies from the 70s.

tech created a device upgrade bubble and its shrinking?

Data Point: I would buy a new device if new devices didn't all suck in the same way existing devices suck.

I would buy a new phone if the new phones storage and memory were twice the amount, so a 2TB and 24GB ram. The camera should be a great improvement also.

The government is in debt. Most people have “bad” debt. How will the latest iPhone help that?
