Samsung reveals its tri-fold phone – and its desktop mode

$2400 is... surprisingly inexpensive? The Z-fold 7 retails for 1600-2000, and an iPhone now retails for up to $2000. This tri-fold is a phone and a full-size tablet. You could easily pay more than $2400 for a phone and a 10" tablet.

Probably the price climbs about 2500 once you get a protection plan, better storage, case etc., but still.

Also 3.9 mm thick is just nuts. The iPhone Air is 5.6 mm thick. I wonder how much thinner phones and tablets will get.

ekjhgkejhgk•2mo ago
Inexpensive for what purpose? From my point of view, $2400 for something that I can do for $100 (phone calls, whatsapp) is very expensive.
rkomorn•2mo ago
They're comparing it to the price of other Samsung devices, and saying it's surprisingly not that much more expensive.
ekjhgkejhgk•2mo ago
Yes, I'm also comparing to the price of other Samsung devices. $100 is how much I paid for a Samsung device.
rkomorn•2mo ago
That's still not their point, but good for you.
lofaszvanitt•2mo ago
Sigh, these totally useless "innovations". Where is the holo screen everyone wants?
qnleigh•2mo ago
Is a 10" screen that fits in your pocket really useless? There's so much more you can do comfortably on a screen that size than on a regular phone.
HighGoldstein•2mo ago
> Is a 10" screen that fits in your pocket really useless?

Yes, at that point you're better off carrying a small laptop.

RandomBacon•2mo ago
You can carry a small laptop in your pocket?
throwaway270925•2mo ago
This IS basically a small laptop.
lofaszvanitt•2mo ago
It is. Gimmick for the masses.
drooopy•2mo ago
Is the number of folds going to be the new "add more cameras"?

smcleod•2mo ago
A few people I know that have bought Samsung folding phones have all had their screens break, I get the desire to have a larger display on a mobile device but they don't seem very reliable.
rjh29•2mo ago
Never using a Samsung foldable again. I bought the 4th gen of ZFold thinking it would be out of the prototype stage, and it fell apart in less than a year. The Chinese makers seem like a better bet and invest in things like silicon carbide batteries, flagship-tier cameras and dual-screen stylus support. Samsung barely innovates while the price has continued to rise with each generation.
maxglute•2mo ago
I get the flexible screen technology isn't there but having entire extra front screen is profoundly inelegant.
