Just read an article on a cell component (a "vault") discovered in the 1980s by a grad student. It's found by the hundreds to thousands in most eukaryote cells. We still have no idea what it does.

The article was all about the quest to discover its use in the cell. It mentioned the lab director who shared credit with its discoverer about 10x as much as the grad student. She was a brief mention in the middle, and again at the end where it noted she went on to discover yet another fundamental part of complex cells.
