Ask HN: Tech Interview Coaches Worth the Money?

2•idontwantthis•1mo ago
Hey HN,

I currently have a job, but I'm hoping to find a better one. Trying to get senior software engineer roles at startups, and I'm getting lots of interviews, but even after making it to a few final rounds, it seems I'm not impressing them enough technically. I also don't really get any feedback, so I don't know what to improve. I leave each interview feeling like I satisfied them, but then not getting an offer. I'm not talking about l33tcode either. Either take home assignments or system design or just conversations.

Is there a company I can hire that would help me out with this that is worth the money? Willing to pay, but not willing to waste my money and time.

Have you tried mock interviews with an AI agent, and specifically asking the AI to ask you the same questions you were asked, and doing your best to answer as you did? Have you already tried this and did you get useful feedback?
idontwantthis•1mo ago
I did try that and the problem I found was that there is no boundary to the question with an AI. Maybe there is some product out there that handles that, but when I tried to get it to ask me to design an email system, for example, it just kept adding features. Plus AIs don't like telling you you are wrong. And, if I knew how to guide the AI into giving a good interview, I don't think I would need its help anymore :)

do you want to reach out (email in profile)? I'm happy to spend 30 minutes on a call about this
