When Catholics (and Orthodox Christians and most historic Protestant traditions) claim that Mary was a virgin before the birth ("virginitas ante partum") they mean that Mary conceived Jesus without sexual intercourse, the conception was by the Holy Spirit.
That is of course nonsense.
