If you're bored this holiday, Dwarf Fortress is a very easy recommendation now that it has official sprites. Fortress Mode is a well-tuned classic, and Adventure Mode is open-ended enough that you can recruit mercenaries with a talented band of human carolers.
It's been said many times before, but DF is awe-inspiring stuff. It's one of the few games I've played in my life that is capable of putting Minecraft into perspective.
