But lately every conversation with a company hiring for “DevRel” feels like a different job entirely:
Some want a content creator.
Some want support without calling it support.
Some want sales without calling it sales.
Some want a one-person marketing department.
Some just want someone fun to put on stage.
I get that the role is flexible. It should be flexible. DevRel adapts to the product and the community. But if everything is DevRel, then nothing is?
And honestly, it feels like the industry has decided DevRel is optional again — something you bolt on later, once the product is magically perfect and already has a community.
Anyway — I’m trying to figure out where the companies are that still believe in developer experience, community, education, and real relationships… not just vanity metrics.
If you work somewhere like that, I’d love to hear from you. I’m currently on the market. But mostly I just want to know I’m not the only one wondering what the hell is happening with a position I spent 10 years perfecting.
